What Is an RSS Feed?
MERLN has created a Rich Site Summary (RSS) Feed to alert our users each time our MiPALs are updated. You can use a program known as a reader (or an aggregator) to collect the feeds from MERLN and your other favorite websites. There are two advantages to using an RSS reader. First, you get instant alerts each time a site is updated. Second, it saves you the time and effort of daily visits to individual websites: the RSS reader does the work for you by collecting the feeds from your favorite sites, packaging the feeds into one place, and delivering them directly to you. The more sites you visit, the more you benefit from using RSS. Now that many news sites, like the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal provide RSS feeds, it is becoming easier than ever to keep current with news and information on the web. top
How Do I Use the RSS Feed?
First, you will need to download and install a reader. Many of them are available as freeware (see section below on finding a reader.) Once you have a reader, visit the MERLN RSS site and look for this link:
Syndicate this site:
This is the link to our RSS feed. Follow the instructions provided by your reader on syndicating or subscribing to a feed – usually as simple as copying and pasting the feed’s address (in our case, http://merln.ndu.edu/RSS/MERLN.xml) into your reader. Once you have subscribed, MERLN does the rest – your reader will alert you each time we update our feed with the latest additions to our MiPALS. top
Where Can I Find a Reader?
There are many to choose from. While MERLN does not endorse any particular reader, here are some of the more popular ones:
